My name is Justine Torres. I'm a sophomore at Bishop Moore Catholic High School, and I currently uphold the position of Nigerian Partnership Chair for Bishop Moore's IBIP Medical Team. I'm extremely passionate about real-world issues concerning environmental sustainability and thus enjoy lending my talents and abilities to resolve global concerns. I consider myself to be passionate, rational, and hard-working about a wide variety of topics, which is reflected in the numerous extracurricular clubs and activities of which I'm an active member. At Bishop Moore, I'm involved in numerous organizations, my favorites being the Black and Gold Brigade (marching band) and Liturgical Ensemble (chorus). I have a love for music and find it rewarding and exhilarating to be part of a team whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I'm also an active member of my school's Hornet House of Representatives and Leadership team, which allows me to be involved in a number of service projects in my surrounding community. I have an avid interest in the field of medicine, which translates through my membership in my school's Hippocratic Society. In short, I have many passions, and my goal is to use the gifts I have and the qualities I possess to help people and ultimately make the world a better place to live.
My name is Jason Torres. I have the privilege and honor of being the College Assistance Chair of this med team. I currently attend Bishop Moore Catholic High School as a sophomore. At Bishop Moore, I am involved with the leadership team and marching band. Outside of Bishop Moore, I am also involved as a current Star scout in my troop. I take honors and AP classes and am on the principal’s honor roll. In my free time, I like to be with my friends, watch, soccer, and play soccer. I consider myself to be an extroverted and breezy person. I also pride myself in my work ethic and tenacious, above all other things, instilled in me by my supportive family and friends. I do not yet know what career path I would like to go into, but I like learning about things, especially science. God has given me many gifts, and I can’t wait to show the world what I can do with them!

My name is Marc Zavarro and I am a member of the Class of 2022. I am a Freshmen at Western High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I push myself to put my skills and dedication in multiple school clubs and charities. Throughout my middle school careers and my upcoming High School Career, I have been and will be a leader in a Charity known as Children Helping Other Children. Along with being in multiple charities, I am a nationally represented Debater ranking number 6 in the nation for my category. I have excelled in some of the highest classes offered. In my first year of high school, I am taking AP classes. In 7th grade, I obtained 1110 on my SAT. I would like to follow a career in Political Science in my college future.

My name is Christopher Karle. I live in Ridgefield, Connecticut and will be graduating from Immaculate High School in 2022. I am passionate about health, wellness, and sustainability, so I founded Head2Toe where we donate hand-knitted baby hats to hospitals and community centers to support the health of infants; made adult hats from recycled cloth to improve the wellness of the homeless through the Midnight Run Organization; and recycle gently used shoes to Soles4Souls to outfit people in poverty-stricken areas both domestically and internationally. I received the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Award for my diplomacy, ability to work with others, willingness to take on challenges, and ability to honor commitments (2018). I am an active member of Lions Heart, a community service based group, where I have earned both the Bronze and Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for 50 and 100+ hours of service respectively (2017, 2018). I have also been a Peer Mediator for 3 years. Athletically, I am a member of the GMS Rowing Club. Learning to row has taught me perseverance, hard work, and teamwork. I strive to use my knowledge and skills to work collaboratively with my team and our business partner. I am honored to work with the International Business Internship Program and to participate in the International Leadership and Business Summit in order to provide creative solutions to our Nigerian partners

Story of the Business
The Shifa Royal Hospital & Surgery Center was created in 2013 by Dr. Zubairu Abubakar Madaki. Shifa Royal offers a multitude of critical services to the greater Bauchi Community including outpatient services, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecological services, family planning, laboratory, and pharmaceutical services. Its mission is to provide exemplary health services to the Bauchi populaces irrespective of age, sex, race, tribe, religion, ethnic background, and social status. The hospital is accredited as a provider in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Shifa Royal Hospital & Surgery Center has 10 distinct departments that are currently partnered with Leadership Initiatives’ International Business Internship Program:
The hospital’s Administrative Department manages clinical and administrative functionalities within the hospital towards ensuring that the hospital constantly delivers top quality service while remaining financially viable.
The Nursing Department is saddled with the responsibilities of overseeing all nursing activities in the hospital, which includes both Nursing and Midwifery.
The Laboratory Department performs a wide variety of tests using available technology. Those working in the lab analyze common tests such as malaria, viral infections, glucose, cholesterol, liver and heart enzymes, thyroid tests, and hormone tests.
The Accounting Department is a multidimensional entity of the hospital that maintains and monitors the hospitals financial reporting system. The department provides accurate and timely financial reports to the hospital staff and administration. They are responsible for accounts payable, payroll, and the development of all financial statements and reports.
The Pharmacy Department is responsible for all medicines produced and dispensed to outpatients, day patients, and inpatients. Pharmacists work as part of the clinical team to dispense medications. They are responsible for ensuring that correct medicines are prescribed, devising and supervising treatment plans for patients, and providing information about medicines to staff and patients.
The Medical Records Department at the hospital provides an essential service to the patients and doctors which involves the distribution, storage, security, maintenance, repair and destruction of medical records in accordance with national guidelines. The library holds all patient records and is a ‘closed’ library, only accessible to approved staff needing to collect records for patient attendances, including clinics and planned and emergency admissions.
The Procurement Department provides a purchasing and supplies service across the Hospital and acts as a procurement agent for medical staff. The department ensures the correct supplies are available to doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to provide the critical care needed in the Bauchi area.
The Internal Audits Department strives to uses their technical knowledge and advisory recommendations to help groups manage operations more efficiently. The department oversees budgeting and expenditures, recordkeeping, patient billing and collections, organizational structures, information systems, and operations at the hospital.
Security staff ensures that hospitals and clinic sites are accessible and safe for patients, visitors and staff. They also protect buildings and valuable equipment. The Security Department works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help make the hospital safe and secure.
The hospital’s Cleaning Department is responsible for the regular and routine cleaning of all surfaces and maintaining a high level of hygiene in the facility in collaboration with the Infection Control Committee. The department prevents further infection and ensures the safety of all patients, nurses, doctors, and otherwise.
The partnership between Leadership Initiatives’ International Business Internship Program and the Shifa Royal Hospital & Surgery Center will expand available health resources in underdeveloped communities and improve the life-saving services the hospital provides in the region.
